La Reunion Travel Guide

In the Indian Ocean, in close proximity to the island of Mauritius and situated east of Madagascar, lies an overseas French region by the name of La Reunion, a merger of spectacular landscapes and a cosmopolitan population. Measuring only 63 by 45 kilometres, it is inhabited by people of a very diverse ethnical background (Europeans, Indians, Africans, Chinese), the population being concentrated mainly along its coasts due to the geomorphological characteristics of the island. The capital city is Saint-Denis and communities are grouped into many cities of similar sizes. La Reunion has often been compared to Hawaii due to its formation, climate and intense volcanic activity.

The island boasts a flourishing tourism, mainly due to its expansive virgin mountainous territory which is densely forested and very endeared by hikers and photographers, and anyone with a sense of adventure. The views attainable from certain altitudes (the Piton des Neiges volcano measuring no less than 3,070 metres in altitude, whilst the second volcano, Piton de la Fournaise, reaches 2,631 metres and the La Roche Écrite massif rising to 2,276 metres) are truly breath-taking, whilst the journey upwards is an exciting challenge for any hiker. A significant part of the island’s territory has recently been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, (comprising the two volcanoes, the three Cirques and the Remparts). This region is actually the centre of Reunion National Park, recognized in 2007 and comprising two main areas, namely the Saint-Philippe Mare-Longue Nature Reserve and the La Roche Écrite Nature Reserve, the latter being established for wildlife preservation.

Moreover, the wildlife on La Reunion draws nature lovers from all over the world, particularly those interested in exotic sea life. The picturesque coral reef bordering the west coast of the island is home to a great variety of animals, among them sea turtles. The island’s rich birdlife also makes it an optimal destination for bird watching enthusiasts.
